Rotation sensing at the ultimate limit

چکیده

Abstract Conventional classical sensors are approaching their maximum sensitivity levels in many areas. Yet these still far from the ultimate limits dictated by quantum mechanics. Quantum promise a substantial step ahead taking advantage of salient states to environment. Here, we focus on sensing rotations, topic broad application. By resorting basic tools estimation theory, derive that achieve sensitivities estimating both orientation an unknown rotation axis and angle rotated about it. The critical enhancement obtained with optimal should make them indispensable ingredient next generation is now blossoming.

Probing the ultimate limit of fiber-optic strain sensing.

The measurement of relative displacements and deformations is important in many fields such as structural engineering, aerospace, geophysics, and nanotechnology. Optical-fiber sensors have become key tools for strain measurements, with sensitivity limits ranging between 10(-9) and 10(-6)ε hertz (Hz)(-1/2) (where ε is the fractional length change). We report on strain measurements at the 10(-13)...

Interacting Atomic Interferometry for Rotation Sensing Approaching the Heisenberg Limit.

Atom interferometers provide exquisite measurements of the properties of noninertial frames. While atomic interactions are typically detrimental to good sensing, efforts to harness entanglement to improve sensitivity remain tantalizing. Here we explore the role of interactions in an analogy between atomic gyroscopes and SQUIDs, motivated by recent experiments realizing ring-shaped traps for ult...

Ultimate limit to human longevity

Are there limits to human longevity? We suggest a new demographic model to describe human demographic trajectories. Specifically, the model mathematically defines the limits of longevity. Through the demographic analysis of trends for Sweden (between 1751 and 2002), Switzerland (between 1876 and 2002) and Japan (between 1950 and 1999), which are the longest-lived countries, we would like to dem...

Comment on "Probing the ultimate limit of fiber-optic strain sensing".

Gagliardi et al. (Reports, 19 November 2010, p. 1081) described an ultrahigh-resolution fiber-optic strain sensor. This comment addresses an error in the calculation of the fundamental thermodynamic noise in optical fiber resonators and shows that the actual thermodynamic noise level is lower by a factor of at least 11 than that calculated.

Response to Comment on “Probing the Ultimate Limit of Fiber-Optic Strain Sensing”

Cranch and Foster argue that the strain resolution of our fiber resonator sensor is not limited by thermal noise. However, extension of common theoretical models to high-finesse passive resonators at low frequency needs further attention. Our findings are consistent with noise of thermodynamic nature for which no experimental evidence in the infrasonic range was available until recently. Therma...
